Protaras Travel Guide

Cyprus is one of the largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea.The island has plenty of sunshine, throughout the year and there is so much history, culture, tradition and beautiful beaches that there is something for everyone to do.

Protaras is one of the three towns in the district of Ammochostos. This small town has a magical presence and is well known for some of the most beautiful beaches with golden sand that last for miles. Prophet Elias church in Protaras which is on a hill 100 metres high has a panoramic view of the entire town.A challenge is to climb the 300 steps up the hill and view this breathless sight and visit the tiny church of Prophet Elias.

Protaras is a family oriented resort situated on the east coast of Cyprus. It is about ten minutes away by car from Aiya Napa. Fortunately the sea has retained its glassy clarity and Protoras’ beaches are among the best on the island. Travel north and you’ll discover isolated coves bitten from the coastline, while eight kilometres to the south there’s the 24-hour party Mecca that is Ayia Napa.Sunbathing is usually at the top of most visitors’ agendas and hotels have come up with numerous ways of keeping the kids occupied.Protaras is popular with Cypriots and the beaches can get very busy and anyone wanting to ‘get away from it all’ should head south to Cape Greko. Besides ‘peace and quiet’ the rocky shoreline provides some great snorkelling and diving.

No matter what season you choose to visit Protaras, there is so much to do and see.In the summer it is the ideal season for swimming, sunbathing and a whole range of water sports. In the fall it is a great opportunity for inland excursions to villages and vineyards for wine tasting and you could even enjoy the traditional cheese making.  In the winter the Troodos Mountains and the ski resorts are perfect.

During Spring, the countryside is breathtaking with the beautiful fresh green meadows and flowers in bloom. This is an ideal time for nature hikes. The most famous beach in Protaras is the Fig Tree Bay which has a golden sandy beach and clear waters. You can actually see the fishes swim near your legs! There are plenty of water sports to try. Sun loungers and umbrellas are available for hire. There are other two beaches but not as clear and golden as Fig Tree Bay.Due to its exceptionally good weather and the fact that it combines green surroundings with deep blue clear waters,Protaras will offer you great opportunities for beach holidays first of all. You can find beaches in Cyprus that suit all ages and types of visitors; from families with small children to those who look only for privacy. The mountains and their interior offer a fascinating contrast to the coast which is a plus to the whole scenery.

Santorini culture

Protaras culture

In the North the most likely first point of contact tourists have with Islam is when visiting a mosque. Women must cover-up, including their heads, and both men and women are required to remove their shoes.Mosques should be visited outside of prayer times. Muslims are sensitive about having their photograph taken, and should be asked first.

Santorini nature

It's also forbidden to take photographs of military installations and government buildings. In the Christian dominated South of the island the dress code is much more relaxed; however shoulders and legs should still be covered when visiting a monastery.Traditional costumes are now generally only donned for the benefit of tourists, but you can still see the occasional local male wearing a pair of baggy black trousers, or vraka, supported by woven belt known locally as a sostra, with an embroidered waistcoat underpinning a white shirt on the top half and a pair of high black boots on the bottom half.
